SAN DIEGO — A large population of grizzly bears has been spotted in northern California and its foothills.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said the bears were spotted Sunday in the Chico area, south of Chico, California, and a ranger found two bears with signs that indicated they had been spotted on Thursday.
The bears were in the middle of a migration, according to a news release from the Fish and Game Department.
They were seen on Friday in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, which are home to an abundance of rare grizzly.
Bears are one of the most elusive animals on Earth, with no native predators.
The animals can reach speeds of up to 80 miles per hour and are a threat to livestock, humans and wildlife, the Fish & Wildlife Service noted.
